At The Ivy House Secondary School for Girls, art classes serve as a platform for creativity, expression, and critical thinking. Pupils explore how artists communicate ideas, challenge assumptions, and shape society through visual language.
Through the study of drawing, painting, sculpture, mixed media, and contemporary art, pupils develop technical skill alongside imagination, confidence, and independent thought. They investigate influential artists, including Banksy, and explore inquiry questions such as, Can art change society? and Is graffiti art or vandalism?
Art encourages pupils to observe carefully, think deeply, and express themselves with purpose. It nurtures resilience, emotional awareness, creativity, and problem-solving while preparing pupils for GCSE Fine Art and future creative pathways.
A key feature of our curriculum is the opportunity for pupils to curate and present exhibitions of their own work, enabling them to share ideas, celebrate achievement, and understand the power of art to influence, inspire, and communicate. Through art classes, pupils develop valuable lifelong skills including creativity, visual communication, critical analysis, research, project management, collaboration, and presentation. They learn to evaluate ideas, refine their work through constructive feedback, and communicate complex messages through visual media. These skills support success across the curriculum and prepare pupils for further study, employment, and active participation in society.
