Al Muqaddimah

Understanding Civilisations. Restoring Worldview. Preparing Future Leaders.

The Al Muqaddimah programme is centred around the work of the great Muslim scholar, historian, and thinker Ibn Khaldun (1332–1406). Widely regarded as one of the founders of sociology, historiography, economics, and political theory, Ibn Khaldun transformed the way societies, leadership, education, and civilisations were understood.

His renowned work, Al Muqaddimah, examined why civilisations rise and decline, how worldviews shape societies, and the role of knowledge, morality, identity, and leadership in building strong communities.

At The Ivy House, the 5 year Al Muqaddimah Study develops students into reflective, articulate, and critically aware thinkers through the Islamic worldview, connecting history, civilisation, philosophy, society, and contemporary global challenges in a way rarely taught within mainstream education.Al Muqaddimah is a distinctive five year programme taught from Year 7 to Year 11 at The Ivy House Girls School.

The programme is organised around several core strands:

• Civilisational Studies
• Islamic Worldview and Epistemology
• History and Historiography
• Sociology and Social Cohesion
• Economics and Political Thought
• Colonialism and the Modern World
• Ethics, Leadership and Renewal

Through these strands, pupils explore profound questions about knowledge, power, justice and the forces that shape nations and communities. The Muqaddimah develops critical thinking, research, debate and analytical writing while nurturing a strong sense of identity, purpose and responsibility. Above all, it prepares young Muslim women to understand the world deeply, think independently and contribute to the renewal of the Ummah and the betterment of humanity.

The Muqaddimah

The Muqaddimah is one of the most distinctive subjects offered at The Ivy House Girls School. Inspired by the work of Ibn Khaldun, the fourteenth-century Muslim historian and scholar, this unique programme explores why civilisations rise, flourish and decline.

Named after Ibn Khaldun's celebrated work, The Muqaddimah, meaning "The Introduction", the subject examines the relationship between knowledge, faith, leadership and social change. Pupils study how the Islamic world became a global centre of learning, how knowledge was transmitted across civilisations, and how historical, intellectual and political forces shaped the modern world.

Taught from Year 7 to Year 11, The Muqaddimah runs alongside mainstream History as a specialised civilisational studies programme. It combines history, philosophy, sociology and Islamic intellectual tradition to help pupils understand the deeper patterns that shape nations and societies.

Throughout the course, pupils explore the Islamic Golden Age, the House of Wisdom in Baghdad, the transmission of knowledge from the Muslim world to Europe, the causes of civilisational decline, colonialism, contemporary global power structures and the continuing challenges facing the Muslim world today.

A central theme of the subject is the study of knowledge itself. Pupils examine how reason, observation and revelation work together, and how different worldviews influence the development of societies. Rooted in an Islamic worldview, The Muqaddimah helps pupils develop critical thinking, historical understanding, intellectual confidence and a deeper appreciation of their scholarly heritage.

More than a history course, The Muqaddimah is an intellectual journey that enables young women to understand the world they inherit and the responsibilities they carry.

By studying why civilisations rise and fall, pupils learn that history is not simply a record of the past. It is a guide to understanding the present and a blueprint for rebuilding the future.
